Porn

I just took this survey: http://www.pornresearch.org/survey.html. It's documenting how porn has affected different people, trying to figure out if it's actually all negative, or if it's more positive. It's an interesting, well thought out survey. And it brought up some interesting thoughts for me on my relationship with porn that I hadn't really thought about before.
For instance, what has porn taught me about sex, and what would I miss about it if I couldn't have it anymore? My answer was that pornogragy, ironically enough, taught me that it doesn't matter what your body looks like when it comes to sex. The bodies in it are so obviously avatars for reality that it's easy to juxtapose yourself in their place. It taught me, through negative example and some positive, to NEVER fake an orgasm, which has done wonders for my enjoyment of sex. It taught me that men, and women, don't care about the stupid faces you're making, the noises that are coming from your mouth and your body, the jiggly bits, the funny smells (well, within reason). All that matters during sex is the visceral feelings, uncluttered by nonsense. And it taught me that my love of rought, animilistic, enthusiastic sex is not only ok, it's kinda hot.
I honestly wouldn't miss much at this point in my life if I couldn't access porn anymore. But I WOULD have missed out on an opportunity to explore my sexual boundaries in my own head, and therefore become the sexually confident and active person I am today.
I grew up religious, and ashamed of my love of sex. I was a virgin till I was 23, but I was consuming porn, starting with that bastion of feminine porn, romance novels, from the time I was 11. Long years of frustration later, my knowledge about sex helped me break free from my shell and create a healthy, rather active sex life for myself. I honestly don't think I could have done that without porn. Not that porn is required for everyone to have a healthy sex life. It's not. But for me, I needed to KNOW what I was getting into (as it were). I needed that knowledge, that push to explore my own boundaries, that constant goad of being horny and seeing hot people doing it... ;D. I say, Hurray for Porn.
