Is it terrible that my reaction to this article is an eye roll and a "No f'ing shit, Sherlock"?
Good lord. Especially this part:
There's a strain of extremely hardy coca plant growing all over Latin America right now that is almost completely resistant to any sort of herbicide except the most toxic. It's a strain that created itself in under 10 years, which is an insanely short period of time for a plant to evolve. Why did it do so? Because of the "War on Drugs". We sprayed so much Roundup throughout it's natural habitat that the evolution of the plant was spurred into high speed. We created a plant that we don't have the resources to destroy in an effort to look like we were doing something decisive. Fucking brilliant.
Now the same thing is happening to weeds all over America. And we're surprised?? Good lord. Shit like this makes me remarkably angry. Mostly because the reason this is happening is because we're so freaking focused on the easiest, fastest solution to any problem that we refuse to look at the big picture and have the patience to wait for an actual solution. We want band-aids for cancer because they're easy to apply, but we refuse to acknowledge the cyst boiling beneath the surface. Till things like this happen.
It's even more infuriating because the weed that's causing the most trouble at the moment is a form of freaking Amaranth! It's freaking edible! And remarkably good for you. It's drought resistant, hardy, full of nutrients, easy to harvest, and has been consumed by humans for thousands of years. But it's not corn, soybeans, or cotton. So, instead of utilizing it, the most likely course of action is going to be killing it with incredibly toxic herbicides which will then be plowed into the earth so as to leave the fields free for other crops. Most of which WONT EVEN BE EATEN, and instead will be processed and sold to the industrial complex.
